What is a collapsible steering column?

A collapsible steering column is a type of automobile steering column that is designed to collapse or deform during a crash in order to absorb energy and reduce the risk of injury to the driver. These columns are equipped with features such as energy-absorbing materials and telescoping sections that allow them to deform upon impact, reducing the amount of force transmitted to the driver.

How do collapsible steering columns reduce injury?

Collapsible steering columns are most beneficial in front-end impacts, such as head-on collisions, as they help to absorb energy and reduce the amount of force transmitted to the driver. In these types of impacts, the column collapses and deforms, reducing the risk of injury to the driver and helping to maintain the structural integrity of the vehicle.

When were collapsible steering columns introduced?

Collapsible steering columns were introduced in the late 1960s and have become a standard feature in most modern vehicles. However, not all cars are equipped with energy-absorbing collapsible steering columns, and some older vehicles may still have rigid, non-collapsible columns.

Do all cars have energy absorbing collapsible steering column?

Collapsible steering columns became a requirement for all new passenger cars sold in the United States in 1978 as part of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 204. The standard was introduced to reduce the risk of serious injury to drivers and passengers in the event of a crash.
